Laurie Frankel’s novel, This is How It Always Is (Flatiron) was named one of the best books of 2017 by Popsugar, Chicago Public Library, Bustle and People and others and it was one of our favorites too. It’s a warm hearted story of a family coping with their youngest child’s unexpected announcement that she is in fact a girl.

“Laurie Frankel has written one of those very rare, special novels that examines the way we live―in our homes, in our families, in our bodies―with an astonishing balance of humor, complexity, and above all, kindness. This Is How It Always Is teaches us to look beyond the traditional binary oppositions of boy vs. girl, right vs. wrong, real vs. make-believe, and to find courage and beauty in the in-between.” –Ruth Ozeki.

Laurie Frankel is the author of two earlier novels and of several nonfiction essays about adoption and her experiences parenting a transgender child.
