Believing: Our Thirty-Year Journey to End Gender Violence

Anita Hill came to public view when she bravely came forward to protest the nomination of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. Her testimony was riveting and authentic, but it did not dissuade the Senate from their confirmation, setting the stage for the later approval of Brett Kavanaugh. Any woman who comes forward in this manner strains credibility for the elite privileged class of men who are able to discount women as being given to hysteria and hyperbole. Thus, the title of her book, Believing, is a cry for women to be given greater credence and respect for their courage in the struggle for equal rights.

This is the fourth book by Hill, who has focused her life’s work on the law and equal justice. It is a litany of the imbalance of power which many of us know all too well. Shocking, too, is the little known fact that more than half of Native women report being victims of sexual violence and that an over-whelming majority of the violence is perpetrated by non-Native men. This fact alone underlines the need for books such as this to tell the story of the long fight for equality for all women.
