Michael Monahan’s terrorism thriller Counter Strike is the second book starring protagonist PJ Carpenter. The book picks up where the last one, The Bringer of Death, left off. Immediately, the book starts off with a bang with a terrorist attack in Minnesota. When PJ Carpenter, a CIA paramilitary officer, learns of the attack, he immediately suspects that his archenemy from the previous book Sadiq bin Aziz, also known as “The Bringer of Death,” is behind it. His suspicions are confirmed when Al Qaeda releases a video message praising Aziz and warns of more, far deadlier attacks. Meanwhile, Aziz splits with Al Qaeda and creates his own terror group, which is far deadlier. As he launches attacks in various parts of the world, it is clear to PJ Carpenter that Aziz will stop at nothing to achieve his goal of world domination. To prove his point, Sadiq bin Aziz plans a terrorist attack so deadly that it would disrupt the current world order. Now it is up to PJ Carpenter and his men to find Aziz before it’s too late.

Counter Strike is a well-written novel. There is a lot of action, and readers feel like they are in the middle of it all. Characters are quite developed as well, and the author does a good job explaining each character’s motivations and inner demons. I would say that Michael Monahan’s novels are definitely up there with the big and established thriller writers like Mark Greaney or Brad Thor.
