When the Doctor returns to his house in Wales, he’s surprised to discover someone living there: a talented artist named Josie Day. And he’s arrived just in time to see her paintings come to life. Josie and the Doctor deal with this strange new threat and he learns more about this mysterious woman as they confront a crystalline invasion, a magician’s magic mirror, a plant uprising, and a sinister spa in space.

The Eighth Doctor is the one fans of Doctor Who have spent the least time with, but he remains a popular, if polarizing figure in the mythos of the show. George Mann takes advantage of this and adds considerably to the Doctor’s personality, quirks, and core values in these five adventures, showing us the depth of his compassion and his impish sense of humor all at once. (A perfect example? The Doctor’s smile contrasted with Josie’s horrified expression as they both say “a monster!” at the same time.)

I do think the stories would have benefited from a little more breathing room, as plot points and resolutions come a bit too quickly. But the final twists work nicely, reinforcing classic Doctor Who themes of the value of life and individual choice.
