Fantasy stories for young people is one of the strongest genres in book publishing. This has engendered a great interest in the wide variety of creatures mentioned in the genre and what they might look like. This book is for young artists who have developed a desire to learn to draw these fantastical creatures. A very short introduction covers a discussion of style and a reminder of a simple list of needed materials. This is followed by lessons for drawing 48 different beings, everything from different kinds of dragons to ogres to krakens to troglodytes to gorgons to harpies and so many more. Each lesson includes some text telling about the creature, its size, where it lives, its physical features, and a paragraph about its habits. There are a series of sketches from the simplest outline of the form to a very finished sketch with a final color drawing and a suggestion for another project to practice the skill. The writing is fun, and all the finished artwork is, well, fantastic! Author and illustrator A.J. Sautter has created a perfect instructive book for budding artists that should be wildly popular with middle-graders and high schoolers alike.
