Lady Jessica and Duke Leto have had a falling out. Jessica is on her way to the Bene Gesserit home world of Wallach IX. Duke Leto has gone to the capital of the empire with a broken heart and looks to find some connections to make the House of Atreides stronger. Paul is fourteen years old, figuring out his place and flexing his muscles as acting duke while his father is away. The Baron Harkonnen is scheming about how to make the most profit. The CHOAM leader and emperor are up to their own political devices.

This book follows six to seven characters through their personal and political intrigues. This may sound like a lot, but Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson do a fantastic job of making every character seem really different and help the reader follow along without issue. It’s interesting the see the Bene Gesserit school. If I thought they were twisted before, this book confirmed my thoughts. Of course, all of the others in the galaxy have their own unique and often twisted agendas.

My favorite characters are the Atreides family because while they have a lot of trouble going on, they genuinely are trying to do what is best for not just themselves but for others too. If you love the Dune universe, this is a must have for your collection.
