Girl in the Afternoon
Girl in the Afternoon follows Aimee Savaray as she tries to become a well-known artist in the time of the impressionists. She is born into a wealthy family in Paris and loves the boy her family raised as their own. However, he leaves inexplicably during the Franco-Prussian war. Later, Aimee begins to study under Edouard Manet, and she discovers Henri, the boy who left, still in Paris making a living as a painter. Eventually, she finds out why he really left and things in her family are never really the same again. Some secrets are hard to move past.
Even if though it was fiction, I enjoyed seeing what Manet might have been like and how he influenced others artwork. I found the plot to be a bit dramatic and predictable, but not bad. I can’t imagine how hard it must have been for a woman, especially the daughter of a wealthy family to try to break into the male-dominated art world. If you love art and the people who create it, or even just Paris, I think you will like this book.
