Guide to Western National Monuments

National monuments, unlike national parks, are lands set aside by presidential decree. There are 122 such places in our country, and this book provides excellent overviews of 76 of the national monuments found in eleven western states––Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

A short introduction includes a history of national monuments, rules for visiting, and essentials to carry along. Each state’s section opens with a state map with all the national monuments marked. Each monument has a section of a few pages showing the nearest towns, the size in acres of the monument, the best season to visit, and notable activities. This is followed by a short historical write-up, things to do, things to see, how to get there, what facilities they have, and useful contacts. In addition, there are several gorgeous full-color photographs of sights, plants and flowers, and wildlife found in each monument.

All of the writing, but especially in the historical write-ups, is excellent and interesting to read. This will be a most useful guide for anyone who enjoys camping, hiking, and sightseeing in the western states. It’s very complete and a joy to read.
