Beth Ferry, author of the delightful Stick and Stone is at it again with Pirate’s Perfect Pet. Pirate Captain Crave has everything needed to be the best buccaneer…Except a pet. Naturally, he leads his crew on a chaotic romp in search of the perfect pirate pet. But neither beach animals nor farm animals will do. How about the zoo? Nope, although Captain Crave gets that peg leg he wanted. Eventually, Crave ends up where most kids would start their hunt–a pet store.

Captain Crave is a likable protagonist, with an amusing piratey patois, even if his desire for a peg leg is a bit dark. While the story doesn’t offer a clear theme, young readers will have no difficulty focusing on the various (and hilarious) failed attempts by Crave to find that perfect pet. Word play like “aye-eye-I,” “well, shuck me an oyster,” and “shiver me Shih Tzus” will entertain adults as well.

Matt Myers illustrates this tale with colorful, bold paint strokes that effectively convey action and humor. With a welcome nod to diversity, the pirate first mate is a woman of color. Fun details, like one pirate wearing pink bunny slippers, will reward attentive young readers.
