It isn’t easy being different; especially when you are being relentlessly teased and judged for your uniqueness. All of the animals in the jungle seem to have something that sets them apart. Although they accept their own differences, Hippopotamus can’t. When Hippo sees Elephant’s unusually long trunk, he focuses all of his efforts on yelling at Elephant and insisting that he stop flaunting his “flaw”. While Hippopotamus is harassing Elephant and laughing at his peculiar trunk, his baby heads for certain danger. Elephant reaches out his extraordinarily long trunk to save Baby Hippo from a terrifying situation. Hippopotamus becomes so grateful to Elephant for saving his baby; he instantly feels remorseful for his callous actions and promises to be more understanding of everyone’s differences.

This story focuses on the harmful effects of bullying and encourages children to embrace differences in others. Elephant’s abnormality ended up saving baby hippo from a deadly situation. Hippopotamus gained perspective from this alarming event and apologized to the elephant for being judgmental. This is the perfect book to teach children ages three to eight about the consequences of their actions, celebrating uniqueness, and being kind to others.
