The Frowning Madonna

It’s an exciting concept: two teenage girls and a young man, all cursed by the Roman goddess Cybele for desecrating her statue. Until they can return the golden orb to its rightful place, they will be reincarnated, living out their lives in cycles. With each cycle, however, the orb gains power, and before long, the trio are not the only ones pursuing it.

The execution, however, left me wanting. The first few cycles were repetitive, blurring together with only the color of the historical events around them (the Viking age, the Norman conquest, the Plantagenets) to make them stand out at all. The characters didn’t change all that much either, and to tell the truth, I had a hard time telling the two main characters apart for the first few cycles. Even when I could, they felt flat and uninteresting, especially for two girls who seemingly had lifetimes in their heads.

The story was interesting enough to pull me along, but with characters I increasingly found irritating, I didn’t enjoy it much. I’d recommend this book only if you want a wild ride through London’s history.
