The Heartbreak Bakery
Syd does not need pronouns but does need baking. Syd knew from age twelve that baking was the way to work out feelings and make others happy. So Syd works at the Proud Muffin, a local bakery run by a sweet queer couple. When W and Syd break up, nothing works better for working out those feelings than break-up brownies. However, those brownies are causing break-ups all over the place, starting with the owners and filtering through favorite customers. Harley (check the pin for the pronoun), who runs Proud Muffin’s delivery service, offers to help Syd find all those couples. That begins an adventure to discover the break-ups that need mending while Syd comes to terms with W’s break-up and Harley’s attraction.
This beautiful story about loss and growth features the magic of baked goods. Be prepared before embarking on this one with a baked treat and a cup of something warm. The chapters are separated by recipes for both baked goods and life, and they are worth the read through as Syd’s comments about the recipes are comical. Syd’s journey with gender identification is real and authentic, as Syd shares how much pressure it is to choose a pronoun. So, so excellent.
