The Setpoint Diet: The 21-Day Program to Permanently Change What Your Body “Wants” to Weigh
In The Setpoint Diet: The 21 Day Program to Permanently Change What Your Body “Wants” to Weigh, Jonathan Bailor holistically describes how you can alter your lifestyle to lower your body’s natural setpoint. As opposed to the standard American diet, Bailor suggests his readers embrace a “SANE” lifestyle: eating tons of veggies and protein, exercising efficiently, and learning to love your body. Bailor teaches his readers to focus on what they can do (eat more veggies) rather than focus on what they should not do (eat that slice of chocolate fudge cake).
I really liked The Setpoint Diet because of Bailor’s encouraging attitude and attention to nutritional science. Bailor explains nutritional concepts in a tone that is compassionate, yet informative. Additionally, Bailor’s setpoint diet is compatible with other popular lifestyles including Whole 30, the Ketogenic diet, the paleo diet, and vegetarian/veganism. As a vegetarian, I found it extremely comforting that I can embrace SANE principles while still avoiding animal products. My one criticism of the book would be that Bailor did not delve deeply enough to the concept of different carbs and how they affect the body. Since I do not plan to completely omit carbs from my diet, I want to know the best choices that will help maintain a healthy setpoint. Overall, The Setpoint Diet was a compelling and accessible read.
