The Truth of Who You Are is a beautifully written saga of a young man’s coming of age and journey into adulthood, as rich and stark as the Appalachian Mountains of his childhood. Ben Taylor is the oldest son in his family, and as they struggle through the Depression and World War II, through loss and bitter arguments, he must try to find himself and craft a place for himself in the world.

There were two things I loved most about this book: the tone and the characters. Myers writes beautiful, almost elegiac prose. It doesn’t work for every story, but for this book, it seems like the only choice that could have been made.

More importantly, Myers gives Ben and his family dignity which is often lacking in stories about mountain folk. There are moments of humor throughout the book, but it is never cruel and rarely at anyone’s expense. This is a story that takes its characters seriously and treats them as human beings, which is something I always look for in a book. It makes the characters and their plot all the more compelling. I highly recommend this novel.
