The View from the Cheap Seats: Selected Nonfiction

Neil Gaiman has forged a fantasy, fairy tale empire around himself with his stories, including one of the most critically acclaimed comic series in history. But in my opinion, Gaiman is never better than when he’s letting readers glimpse his true self behind those curtains of words.

The View from the Cheap Seats collects dozens of nonfiction works by Gaiman over the years, covering the publishing business, the comic business, songs that speak to him, the creative process, personal experiences, and those who inspire him. Names like Douglas Adams, Amanda Palmer, Stephen King, Gene Wolfe, and Will Eisner get tributes, as do classic works of literature and underappreciated gems.

While his stories are hit-or-miss, these pieces are well-written, engaging, and always interesting, mixing a touch of wonder with very realistic, grounded ideas. It’s truly the best of Gaiman. This collection also contains my new favorite work of Gaiman’s, a beautifully surprising piece about his friendship with Terry Pratchett that both makes Pratchett more human and contributes to the legend.

The View from the Cheap Seats will satisfy long-time fans and also bring those who have burned out on Gaiman back into the fold. Impressive stuff.
