Are you planning to adopt a dog? Or are you already a dog parent and don’t know how to deal with the situation anymore? Irrespective of what your answer is, quick, grab a copy of this book! What to Expect When Adopting a Dog is one of the most helpful guides on dog-parenting that you will have come across in recent times. I am appreciative of the author for writing this well-researched and clearly presented guide.

The book is so easy to follow; it is laid out in five plausible modules that walk you step-by-step through almost everything you should know before and after adopting a pup. Diane begins with asking you a few basic questions that will help you assess whether you are ready to be a responsible dog parent. If you think you can commit to being one, you will be guided with tons of resources to help you find your suitable dog. And it does not end here. The book covers all the stages when adopting a dog, from smaller things that we often forget to consider, like preparing your house, to the more important ones, like transition in food habits for your dog or getting him acquainted with the other members of the family.

There is also plenty of great practical information available in the book for those who are already dog parents, like the kinds of leash available in the market, what other practices Diane recommends for an adopted dog, and his psychology and emotional challenges. Throughout the book there are little anecdotes that Diane has included about her own dog adoption experiences, as well as advice from many experts in the pet and rescue industry, which you are sure to value. I read an electronic version and absolutely loved the ease of having links handy to resources for further reading.

Only, once a while, you will get a feel that the author’s tone is strongly pro-adoption and against the other available options, and there is a lot of emphasis on and repetition of the topic. However, in all fairness, she also furnishes a reasonable explanation for her propagating so.

Overall, the book is a perfect guide on what to think about, how to prepare for the change, and, most importantly, how to deal with challenges that might arise after adoption. Whenever I hear someone say they are thinking about getting a dog, I will surely recommend them this book as their first step. This way, I believe, we will end up being fair and making the right decisions for these very amazing dogs.
