Most people are at least familiar with the sport of football and the National Football League. The NFL is a lucrative business that consists of teams that play on Sunday and Thursday nights during set months of the year. Author, NFL president, and activist Gay Culverhouse knows a few things about current and retired NFL players. Culverhouse explains to readers the neurological impact football has on players (similar to getting thrown off a horse and hitting your head). Retired players struggle to get the help they need from their past employers, the reason unknown to everyone outside of the league.

It’s not surprising after reading it, but learning the negative impact football has on its players is astonishing; it’s all in the name of entertainment and money. It’s hard to imagine why someone would willingly put themselves at risk of memory loss and/or psychological issues when the research is easily accessible to prove this. Culverhouse explains the adrenaline rush the sport can offer, helping it make sense. Culverhouse explains anything to do with the game in layman’s terms and keeps it interesting for the reader. I hope When the Cheering Stops: Life after the NFL receives the recognition it deserves for covering such an important topic.
