You are already in a long-term relationship with money. How has it been going?

The premise behind “You are a Badass at Making Money: Master the Mindset of Wealth” by Jen Sincero is unlike any other budgeting or wealth book I have read. The author posits that money is an omnipresent energy force that no one escapes dealing with. It is involved in nearly everything we do in everyday life, so it heard you when you said that “money can’t buy happiness.”

In the initial chapters, the author presents that phrase as one of many indicators that you are not in a healthy relationship with money. I was surprised to uncover limiting beliefs creating a negative undercurrent to my feelings about wealth while considering this book. Even as you work hard for money, the author argues, a negative bias will stymie your abundance and joy.

The second task of the book is to dispel those beliefs and recognize that money can aid in the full expression of self. Money is a tool to be used to create the life and world you want to see. The author suggests that the pursuit of money can be undertaken with gusto, without shame or awkwardness, to fulfill your highest and most generous aims.

The book closes with several chapters on finding your motivation and purpose for building a better money mindset. Self-care fans will recognize some of the techniques presented but find them interesting in this context. The author argues for finding and focusing on your “why” to bolster your wealth-building when difficulties arise.

The author’s strong language will not appeal to all readers. This book is designed to get the reader pumped up to treat money better and get into the currency flow swirling through daily life. I came away with a new perspective of money’s presence and new ideas on how to engage with it. I give this book four stars only because I’m not rich yet.
