Give this true-to-life story some time to get started. More Than I Love My Life: A novel is a story of a dysfunctional family in a dysfunctional society in what is now Croatia. The matriarch of the family, ninety-year-old Vera loves to tell stories about her love for her first husband who was a war hero. After her first husband’s death, Vera remarried, with the caveat that she would always remain true to the memory of her first husband and one true love. She is a strong-willed character with family members revolving around her central life force. Her daughter, Nina, is given to wandering. Her stepson longs for Nina, the mother of his child, Gili. This is an awkward premise for the family to seek the truth by traveling to Vera’s place of imprisonment during the war. Vera had been imprisoned and tortured on Goli Otok (barren island) off the coast of Croatia. Her refusal to denounce her first husband sets the framework for the distance between each generation.
